BEFORE USING SKELAXIN
:
Tell your doctor and pharmacist
what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking,
especially medications for seizures, allergies, colds, or coughs;
pain medications; sedatives; tranquilizers; and vitamins.
tell your doctor if you have
or have ever had kidney disease, liver disease, seizures, or a
blood disorder.
tell your doctor if you are
pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you
become pregnant while taking metaxalone, call your doctor immediately.
DIRECTIONS FOR USING SKELAXIN
:
Follow the directions for using
this medicine provided by your doctor. STORE THIS MEDICINE at
room temperature, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE
OF THIS MEDICINE, take it if it is within 1 hour of the missed
dose. If it is more than 1 hour since the missed dose, skip it
and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses
at once.
SKELAXIN CAUTIONS :
THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE drowsiness
or dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything
else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this
medicine.
THIS MEDICINE WILL ADD TO THE
EFFECTS of alcohol and other depressants. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL
without first discussing with your doctor. Ask your pharmacist
if you have questions about which medicines are depressants.
FOR PATIENTS WITH DIABETES MELLITUS,
this medicine may cause false test results with some urine glucose
tests. Check with your doctor before adjusting the dose of your
diabetes medicine or changing your diet.
Do not take Skelaxin if you
have acute intermittent porphyria.
It is also not known whether
Skelaxin passes into breast milk. Do not take Skelaxin without
first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTSOF
SKELAXIN:
SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away
during treatment, include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, or nervousness.
If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. If
you notice any unusual effects, contact your doctor, nurse, or
pharmacist.
DRUG INTERACTIONS :
Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter
or prescription medication you take including any medication such
as: sedatives, tranquilizers, narcotics (pain medication), sleeping
pills, medication for seizures, depression, allergies, hay fever,
colds. Many drugs can increase the effects of metaxalone, which
can lead to heavy sedation. Before taking this medication, tell
your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
antihistamines such as brompheniramine (Dimetane, Bromfed, others),
chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton, Teldrin, others), azatadine
(Optimine), clemastine (Tavist), and many others; narcotics (pain
killers) such as meperidine (Demerol), morphine (MS Contin, MSIR,
others), propoxyphene (Darvon, Darvocet), hydrocodone (Lorcet,
Vicodin), oxycodone (Percocet, Percodan), fentanyl (Duragesic),
and codeine (Fiorinal, Fioricet, Tylenol #3, others); sedatives
such as phenobarbital (Solfoton, Luminal), amobarbital (Amytal),
and secobarbital (Seconal); phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine
(Thorazine), fluphenazine (Prolixin), mesoridazine (Serentil),
perphenazine (Trilafon), prochlorperazine (Compazine), thioridazine
(Mellaril), and trifluoperazine (Stelazine); or antidepressants
such as doxepin (Sinequan), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline
(Pamelor), fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline
(Zoloft), phenelzine (Nardil), and tranylcypromine (Parnate).
Do not start taking any of the drugs mentioned above without consulting
your doctor. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor
or pharmacist approval.
IF YOU TAKE TOO MUCH SKELAXIN:
Symptoms of a Skelaxin overdose
are unknown but might include low blood pressure (weakness, fainting,
confusion), nausea, severe drowsiness, decreased breathing, and
unconsciousness. If overdose is suspected, contact your local
poison control center or emergency room immediately.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT
SKELAXIN:
DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with
others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE
for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach
of children.
