How To Use Lexapro
Simple 10 mg/day starting dose for all patients. LEXAPRO should
be taken once every day. It may be taken with or without food,
in the morning or evening. Also remember to fill prescriptions
ahead of time to avoid missing a dose. To get the best results,
it is important to follow all of your healthcare provider's instructions
about how and when you should take LEXAPRO.
Precautions
LEXAPRO can be taken with most other medications except another
family of antidepressants called monoamine oxidase inhibitors
(MAOIs). (isocarboxazid [e.g., Marplan], phenelzine [e.g., Nardil],
procarbazine [e.g., Matulane], selegiline [e.g., Eldepryl], tranylcypromine
[e.g., Parnate]) LEXAPRO and MAOIs should not be taken together
or within 14 days of each other. Before you begin taking LEXAPRO,
make sure to tell your healthcare provider if you are taking any
other medications, including over-the-counter medications, herbal
remedies, diet supplements, etc. Be sure to mention anticoagulants
('blood thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin); antihistamines;
carbamazepine (Tegretol); cimetidine (Tagamet); ketoconazole (Sporanox);
lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid, Lithotabs); medications for anxiety,
mental illness, or seizures; metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL);
other antidepressants such as desipramine (Norpramin); sedatives;
sleeping pills; sumatriptan (Imitrex); and tranquilizers. Your
doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor
you carefully for side effects.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual
or allergic reaction to escitalopram or citalopram (e.g. Celexa).
Also tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to any
other substances, such as foods, preservatives, or dyes.
Studies have not been done in pregnant women.
However, studies in animals in medicines similar to this one have
shown that it may cause decreased survival rates and slowed growth
in offspring when given to the mother in doses many times higher
than the usual human dose. Before taking this medicine, make sure
your doctor knows if you are pregnant or if you may become pregnant.
It is not known whether escitalopram passes
into breast milk. A similar drug has been found to pass into breast
milk and it may cause unwanted effects, such as drowsiness, decreased
feeding, and weight loss in the breast-fed baby. It may be necessary
for you to take another medicine or to stop breast-feeding during
treatment. Be sure you have discussed the risks and benefits of
the medicine with your doctor.
Tell your doctor if you have recently had a
heart attack and if you have or have ever had bipolar disorder;
seizures; or liver, kidney, thyroid, or heart disease.
Side Effects
LEXAPRO is well tolerated by most people. The most commonly reported
side effects of LEXAPRO are nausea, insomnia, problems with ejaculation,
drowsiness, increased sweating, and fatigue. Most of the side
effects experienced by patients taking LEXAPRO are mild and go
away with continued treatment, and usually do not cause patients
to stop taking LEXAPRO. The most comon side effects include: Constipation;
decreased interest in sexual intercourse; diarrhea; dizziness;
dry mouth; ejaculation delay; gas in stomach; heartburn; inability
to have or keep an erection ; impotence; increased sweating ;
loss in sexual ability desire, drive, or performance ; nausea;
stomach pain ; sleeplessness; trouble sleeping; unable to sleep;
sleepiness or unusual drowsiness
Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center
or emergency room immediately.
Missed Dose
If you do miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible.
However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed
dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double
doses.
Storage
Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from heat and direct
light. Do not store the capsule or tablet form of this medicine
in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places.
Heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down. Do not
keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed. Be sure that
any discarded medicine is out of the reach of children.
